G'day,

I just built myself a new rig 2 days ago, finally updating windows, drivers, and now with a chance to put on Crysis! Ofcourse many problems sad.gif

THE RIG-

Motherboard - Asus Striker II Extreme
CPU - Intel Quad 9450
Memory - DDR3 2Ghz
Graphics Card - XFX 9800GX2

Just to note, no hardware is being overclocked. CPU Temp @ around 48deg.
GPU Temp @ around 70deg.
Latest Nvidia drivers for both Graphics Card & Motherboard.

THE PROBLEM
Installing Crysis was no problem, patched to V1.2.1 (Latest).
Go to run the game, has massive flashing/blinking occuring, played with graphics in the game with no luck.
Fixed this by turning off Multiple-GPU in the Nvidia Control Panel for Crysis.exe
So start the game again, single player intro works fine, then as soon as you go to jump out the plane at the start, it crashes and you can still hear the music in the background. Can't ALT-TAB or go to Desktop.

So what the hell do I have to turn off to make this game run?
sad.gif

Cheers

EDIT: Oh and it ran the GPU_Benchmark & CPU_Benchmark with no problems.
(The inbuilt benchmarks Crysis comes with)

The temps, are these at load or at idle? If they are at idle, they are just too high fear.gif

At idle, I know 70deg for doing nothing is way way to high.
It's a good case with 3 large fans too.
BigFan
I would say that could be the reason for the problem. For the gpu, get rivatuner and check the fan speed. If the fan is 29% or so, set the fan speed to your preference(~60% or so). As for your cpu, I would remove the cpu fan, wipe the thermal paste, reapply the thermal paste and then readd the cpu fan. Also, rearranging the wiring and check the air flow, because, 48 is toooooo much for idle. My cpu idle at ~27-30 or so for all my 4 cores. At load, I hit ~50 or so. When you load your cpu, you'll be hitting above 65degrees and 70degrees is usually the limit.

Just one other thing, where does the error report file go to once the option is enabled ?

Not too sure, try googling it including the OS you're using smile.gif

Yeah I have and with no luck sad.gif Think it would be simple enough to find! Argh.
Anyways im downloading rivatuner now. see how that goes.
RockyMarc
I've had to crank the fan speed up to over 90% to get it down to 60deg. idle.
Surely this can't be right ?
Can anyone confirm with me if their 9800gx2 is running this hot ?
Bruce88wX
yea that is a bit high... how many fans are in your case? and how many of them are blowing air out of the case?
ShambleS
For the mst pare here every 1 will be at 100% fan speed. But most of us overclock.
60c is still hot mind..
my ati is only 54c idle with serious overclockin, and it wasnt a cool card to start it..

Id like to see what dosty says avarage temps are for him.
but 70 ide is stupid. For a stock gfx card you would hope for 64c MAX aty 100% load. But i dont have the card so cant really say..

It would also be good if you can discribe your fan positioning and the direction each is blowing (in to or out of the case)
badboychris
the 9 series has probs with their fan speeds, even if u set them higher they will drop down to the default speeds. My 9800gtx idles at 60c and goes to 75c load overclocked.
HellasVagabond
Are you sure that it crashed ?? I recall having the same problem when i had AA8x , AF16x and everything on high at a resolution of 1680x1050...
Did you try to lower the graphic settings and run it again ?

I have the same rig nearly mate,

I find the card to get very hot too, same as yours.

When i play crysis I can get about 5 min in and then it hangs, and nothing will bring you back to windows. (the clock on my keyboard also freezes)

I touched the card once it had frozen and it was very hot, the game does the same thing in COD4 too.

If a card over heats would it hang like this?

I've modded the side panel of my case using a hole cutter & added an Akasa 80mm quiet fan set to pull air out of the case right opposite the side exhaust of the GX2, idle temps constant 48/49c after an hour or so, Intel Q6600 idles at 15
There is an another 80mm fan higher up which is set to blow air in & also I have an 80mm fan on the back panel blowing air in & a 120mm extracting on the case rear right next to the CPU fan, all run silently, the only noise is my damn Raptor drive ticking away crying.gif

Using Rivatuner to set fanspeeds with temperature rise it never seen it go above 68c when playing Crysis with settings at max. I have more or less set the same fanspeed for the temp so 60c runs the fan at 60% & so on, the temps are set to permanently show on my taskbar so I can cntrl/alt/del at any time & instantly see the temps, reading forums whilst waiting for my GX2 to arrive made me panic I would overheat but I am nowhere near it seems.
I also have set two hotkeys which I can tap for instant fast or instant quiet but as yet whilst playing games the fan never goes above 70%
I use the hotkey to give a 100% burst if I have just finished playing & want to turn off the PC it cools down to 48 in no time.

Ok you have two options as I see it,

1 RMA your card and hopefully it runs cooler,
2 return your card get your money back and buy an 8800 Ultra Special Edition from EVGA.

The 9800 GX2 cards are great cards for benchmarking they are the king right now so to speak. But the 8800 Ultra is still the King of the gaming field.

The 8800 Ultra will remain the king for games untill a couple of things happen.
1 the drivers get refined, for the GX2, fan issues get fixed, and just pure fixing of the drivers. but very unlikly since its based on the same chip of the 8800 GTS G92 tech they work great at lower resolutions but once the resolution starts getting cranked up you lose performance.
2 The Rumored 9900 series comes out..

AND AGAIN, WE ARE BETA-TESTERS... WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN!

I am facing a similar problem with Crysis.
Eventhough my system built in April 2008 can also be desribed as being on the upper end of the performance scale, the 9800 GX2 (by Gigabyte) delivers absolutely crappy FPS as soon as I switch on AA. This applies to "high" or "very high" graphics settings at 1680*1050 - which I actually bought this graphics card/built the system for. Unfortunately 8800 Ultras were not available anymore...

Switching to Call of Duty4 shows that the 9800 GX2 is well capable to deliver very good performance at highest settings (incl. AA).

CONCLUSION: Crysis + AA = 9800GX2-Killer sad.gif

This is also confirmed by a this test of a German magazine:
http://www.pcgameshardware.de/aid,636620/T...800_GX2/&page=6
If you select 1680*1050 plus 4AA or 8AA (one of the pictures at the bottom) you will see that the card actually doesn't perform at all...

So for the moment, we have to wait for new drivers to (hopefully!) unleash the full potential of this card.

In my opinion this is a shame for nvidia! We are talking about a high-end device (I paid EUR 550,- for mine at that time) that is addressing people who want to play games like Crysis at highest settings. Given the Crysis sales figures and it being one of THE benchmarking references in most hardware-reviews, I wonder why nvidia had (or has?) a blind spot here. As a high-end device it should deliver top-performance from day one and not after xyz-driver updates.

Just imagine Mercedes launching the new S-Class and (after selling it) telling the customers that the air-conditioning can be "unlocked" at the 20.000km-service after one year... They would probably already be sold to Tata after that one haha.gif

When i run my video cards at auto they run at 46 and 50, if i put the fans on 100% i can get them down to AT LEAST 32c and 43c. I have 2 9600gt's

ya it could be over heating. did you make sure you have all of the right updates for windows though? My finance's dad has 2 8800gts' in his and he has vista. his would run really crap or hang on crysis, so he dropped the settings and it worked. but we figured out on nvidia's website that he was missing a bunch of updates for sli on vista.

I don't even looked to COD 4 for testing purposes because it runs so well on everyone's PC's. MY roommate only has a 2600HD and a 2.2 ghz 64x2 and i it runs flawlessly on it. I run over 100 fps
ClydeFrog
Sold to Tata already, CLASSIC haha.gif That is shocking though, to see on the 1280 x 1024 setting with AA and AF turned up that the A** product did SIX TIMES better than the flagship Nvidia product! Immature drivers thumbsdown.gif
