I can't get the Lost Planet DX9 Demo to work on Windows XP Pro 64-bit. It give me an error saying "The operating system is not adequate for running LOST PLANET TRIAL DX9". I just need to know if this is caused by my 64-bit OS. Anybody else have this problem?

Has anybody had this problem with the demo on XP 64bit ?

I would venture a guess that that is exactly the issue. XP-64 is not a well supported OS.

I was able to get it to work on my machine just fine:

q6600
8800gts
XP64

Here's what I did:

1) find a little program called Orca that will let you edit msi installers

2) run the LostPlanetTrialDx9Setup.exe

3) when it gets to the part where it complaings about the operating system, don't close the window but instead explore to the temp folder inside the 'Local settings' folder associated with your username.

4) in there you'll find the recently extraced msi from the exe (there's probably an easier way to get te msi out of the exe, but winrar didn't do it for me and I found this worked...). It will be named some random name (mine was 1a792.msi) but the file size will be almost identical to the exe (around 363MB)

5) copy the msi file to your desktop

6) close the errored installer (which deletes the copy of the msi in the temp folder, good thing we copied it to the desktop smile.gif )

7) open the msi in Orca and find the line that says 'Launch Condition' and delete the associated entry on the right (i just did a right-click -> cut)

8) save the msi file. Make sure to keep the name the same. I tried saving it under a different name and it couldn't find the cab files when installing.

9) run the re-saved msi file, install the game, play.

The game runs buttery smooth on my machine. Not sure why it wouldn't 'support' XP64 as it obvioulsy works here. Just because I'm running xp64 doesn't mean I want to do work *all* the time, I like to play games as much as the next guy...

I found this works well in XP and Vista. Anytime an installer yells about the OS version I am using, I always run the installer in compat mode. I think it has only not worked for me once, but don't remember what program it was.

I tried that on the exe file and it didn't work. I never tried it on the msi file, since by that point I was only a couple of clicks away from just having the non-os restricted version anyway.

ok guys so i dled ocra and followed the instructions and it came up with a error, now im not amazing at coding or any thing bu ti get by so i had a little play and a little trail and error and nothing worked sad.gif i got to the point of just browsing the cd drive and pressnig things to see what happened (the last resort lol) and eventual did this:

launched the exe called launchaction (installing the steam shell)
launched the exe called action1 (updating steam and going to the log in screen)

i missed out the whole first section and agreeing to licencing agreements biggrin.gif

a note though i had previously ran this game on xp32 bit so at steam log in it was just that didnt have to mess around with cd keys ect as i already had done all that so not sure otherwise

just thought ide share that with you all and see if any one found that to work aswell

also the right click compatibility didnt work at all in my case running:

xp64 pro
amd athy 64x2 4400
2gb ram
geforce6800gt/tdh ultra

GusBR
Wait... u can`t install???? how? and did u dl it from steam?
Pachino
no i bought it from a shop, got a hard copy of it

I get the unable to run Launchaction.exe error as well. I don't think that error has anything to do with 64-bit XP since I get the same error without the fix on my brother's computer which is running 32-bit XP.

I think I know how to get it to install. I ran Launch0.exe off of the game disc and steam started up, updated, and then asked what games I wanted to install. The only game on the list was Lost Planet so I clicked next and it started to install off of the disc.

If you have the Disc:
Start steam and drag LaunchAction.exe over steam. Bam!

BTW: I registered an acount here only to reply here and help others smile.gif

yap tnx for this tip. smile.gif

1. installed steam ,started it up.
2. running action0.exe or action1.exe triggers steam to install off the CD.

for some it maybe launch0.exe or launch1.exe too apparently?
