HURRAH!
I have an 8800gts with two samsung SyncMaster 940bw lcds.
Their native resolution is 1440x900. my graphics card kept displaying them at 1280x1024. I send nvidia's tech support and email they (quickly) responded and told me to do a custom timing. It DID NOT WORK. I would create the custom timing and then test it. the test would fail. bummer. so i was waiting for them to answer me back and i decided to do some more research.
It now works.
Here is what i did to get it to work...
1. NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Manage custom timings.
2. Click both "Treat as HDTV" and "Allow modes not exposed by the display"
3. Click [Create...]
4. Under Custom display mode values:
Horizontal desktop pixels: 1440
Vertical desktop lines: 900
GDI Refresh rate: 60
Bits per pixel: 32
(don't have "Interlaced" checked)
5. Click [Advanced >>] (by the way this is where I didn't go when NVIDIA emailed me)
6. Under "Back-end parameters":
Timing standard: DMT
Desired refresh rate: 60
(the rest of the fields are grayed out)
7. Under "Front-end paramers"
Scaling type: Display (none)
8. Click [Test]
9. Click [OK]
And Presto Chango! No more fuzz.
I hope this works for you all. I was frustrated with my brand new graphics card not working properly...

I am in similar situation. I've got two identical 19" SyncMaster 940bw lcds that support 1440x900 native resolution and can only get one monitor to display native resolution when using dual display mode. I have GeForce 7600GS. Gonna try your suggestion. Thanks!
What driver version did you use?

Any ideas to display old nvidia control panel? (New one is uncomplete) or any registry tweak to add 1440x900 resolution?

Hmm registry tweak... I hadn't thought about that one. I'm sure that the "custom timings" are just added to the reg. I'll dig around in there to see what I can find. Look for something tomorrow or Monday...

I can't access any thing but multiple monitor support in the nVidia Control Panel. A registry tweak would be much appreciated.
FYI, I'm running a GeForce 7600 GS (512MB AGP) on a XP Pro x64/Vista x64 dual boot setup. Monitor is a Gateway FPD1975W, which I am using both the DVI and VGA inputs on (the monitor is designed to accept both inputs at the same time).

Thanks nullassult! I was able to get it to work with your post!
I did not see step 2 in my case. Creating custom timing for first monitor was straight forward...just followed your post. For the second monitor though the custom timing did not create for some reason. Workaroud I did was just create default profile then go back and edit that profile to support 1440x900. At this point you may have two profiles for second monitor so I deleted the default one. At this point the 2nd montior flickered but was not displaying 1440x900 yet. From there:
1) Exited from the Nvida application
2) Right click on Nvidia icon from lower right corner of screen
3) Selected Analog Monitor 1 and chose 1440x900
4) Selected Analog Monitor 2 and chose 1440x900. Before the second monitor did not offer this resolution.
Then the 2nd monitor resolution changed to 1440x900 and all is good.
For those interested, I have GeForce 7600GS running with 91.33 driver version.
Just received email from Nivida about downloading patch to get complete control panel options:
In order to get the complete control panel options download a patch from the webiste and install it.

I do not yet have the SM 940bw, but I am interested in an upgrade.
I think it's incredibly cheap for what they say it can do. the problem is
I can't find any review online, and most of the links from google are not in english.
I'm more interested in the "cons", because i read the "pros" on the samsung website.
Can anyone help...maybe write a [complete] review... 10x

Thanx alot for sharing this info Null, I actually ended up RMAing a card over it thinking it was a hardware problem...
Any word on a more permanent fix for this? In some games, like Neverwinter Nights 2 I still end up with the 1280 x 1024 resolution...
I'm hoping a new driver release will enable me to go back to simply setting my desired resolution in the control panel like normal again.

I seem to be facing a similar problem. I have a 6800 and a new widescreen that should run in 1440x900. At the moment the card is running in 1600x900 which the screen seems happy to 'scrunch' down to the correct size but the end result is rather blotchy text.
I tried the suggestions above and the problem I get when trying a custom setting is that when I click on 'test' it tells me my resolution has been updated and gives me the 15 secs to accept but nothing changes (i.e. the screen stays at its current resolution). If I say 'ok' and then exit from the screen no custom timing has been added into the box on the main screen.
I seem to be running a lower spec card than most of you so I am starting to wonder if perhaps it doesn't actually support 1440x900 (although I have found plenty of posts on the web to suggest otherwise). If I could be sure that upgrading the card would fix the problem then that would seem like a good excuse for a new addition to the PC but I don't want to splash out and have the same problem.
So, any additional advice would be much appreciated.

Actually Larne, I don't think it really has anything to do with your card at all. I have a feeling this is a nvidia driver related issue to the 1440 x 900 resolution only...
I am a little confused though, because my other machine which has a 7800GS AGP card runs that resolution perfectly without any custom timings, so I was under the impression this problem was limited to the 8800 series drivers...
I'm actually considering picking up a different monitor, probably a 20" that runs at 1680 x 1050. People don't seem to be having problems with that...

I have the same thing (Samsung 940BW and Geforce 8800GTS) and your solution worked for me, so thanks a bunch. Just an F.Y.I -until I used this, my workaround was to just use the analog cable that came with my 940. For some reason my 8800GTS and 940 play well using the analog cable (VGA).
When I had GeForce 7800GT in the exact same system, and had no problems with 1440x900 and DVI, This is lokking like a problem that a lot of 8800 owner's are having.
The Most recent 8800 series drivers 97.92 do not support the 1440x900 resolution with DVI, hope this is just a temporary and not a permant thing.

You still having problems running games at the 1440 x 900 resolution though?
The funny thing is. Games that do not support widescreen resolutions out of the box I've had to hack, or edit ini files do work using the custom timings solution. Games that do support widescreen resolution end up with the 1280 x 1024 resolution. Weird...

I figured it out. I had 75hz set instead of 60hz. When i run the game it must have sent the 60hz signal which didn't match my custom timing for 75hz and as a result knocked my resolution back to 1280 x 1024 as well.
Guess it goes to show... follow the damn instructions LOL

Please help, I have this same issue! I just got a ViewSonic 19" and have Geforce 4MX. I do not have those options w/ my timing in my control panel as mentioned,,,,,,,,my only options show these under timing:
TIMING MODES (select one)
Auto Detect (windows determines proper mode)
General Timing Formula
Discrete Monitor Timing
Cordinated Video Timing
Fixed Aspect ratio timing
ENABLE DOUBLE SCAN for lower resolution modes.
Nothing that shows these options either:
Manage custom timings.
2. Click both "Treat as HDTV" and "Allow modes not exposed by the display"
3. Click [Create...]
I do not have an interface box or anything that says anything about parameters.
What can I do to fix mine the same way, do I have to download a different driver? This blurry text is driving me nuts! Do I have to download the forceware driver maybe to have the same control panel as you do?

I too have experienced this exact problem when connected via the DVI port. VGA didn't seem to have the problem. I'm running Windows XP Pro and my vid card is a BFG 6800GS AGP connected to a Samsung 906BW. The Nvidia control showed I was using 1440x900, but the monitor info indicated it was at 1280x960. What's odd is that 1280x960 isn't even an available resolution in the control panel.
Kudos to nullassult for finding a work-around.

I've got the same problem, but am using a Sony notebook with the GeForce Go 7400. The control panel has the extra options disabled, and even when I downloaded the registry patch (and checked the registry to see it changed the entries-yes) the custom options are not activated.
Is there any way I can do the changes manually?
Sony's telephone support was less than helpful, telling me to download the drivers from nVidia. This is fine, and exactly what I had already tried, but Sony has made it so that the downloadable drivers will not work, and they told me that there was no way to enable the hidden control panel options.
Any suggestions as to where to go from here?

I just got my new 20" widescreen and was beginning to worry that my 6800GT couldn't handle it.
*phew*
I'm running at 1680x1050, so just be aware that it's not only 1440x990 that has a problem like this. I also didn't have to select "Treat as HDTV", nothing seems to change when I do that.
The funny thing is though, this problem didn't come up until I switched to DVI inputs. When I first plugged it in with analog nothing was wrong.

Change Flat Panel Scalling Tab
Then select use my display's built-in scaling(back to normall) to get my 22inch 1680x1050 wide screen dvi monitor to stretch to fit at 1024x768Resolution
When i installed 163.69 **WHQL** it had changed to

Hi Guys,
I'm not sure if this is exactly the same problem but will outline it and let you decide.
My father-in-law has a GeForce 6200A-LE graphic card and a Chimei CMV 946D widescreen monitor which has a native resolution of 1440x900.
When he boots into WinXP he gets a message in the system tray saying that SLI has been disabled as there's only one card.
He (and I) were getting sick of seeing this message, so I checked his driver version. He was running 9.13.1 dated 1/6/06.
I downloaded the latest version for the 6 series and installed those. version 6.14.11.6218 dated 29/6/07.
When I rebooted, the desktop extended past the edge of the screen. In order to see the right hand side of the desktop, you had to move the mouse past the right side of the screen and the desktop would "slide" along.
I checked the resolution of the desktop and it was still set to 1440x900.
When I clicked on the menu button on the side of the monitor and scrolled down to it's display settings, it was saying that it was 1280x960 @60Hz. This menu section is not user changeable as I guess it's showing what the native resolution is.
The native resolution for this monitor is 1440x900@60hz. Therefore it seems this new driver was changing the native resolution setting of the screen (I know that sounds weird) but with a desktop resolution of 1440x900 and the monitor "set" at is new setting of 1280x960 explains why the desktop was extended past the monitor. Changing the desktop resolution to 1280x960 did allow us to see all of the desktop at once but the display quality was terrible.
I rolled back the driver and the monitor, via it's menu button, now thinks it's native resolution is back to the correct setting of 1440x960@60Hz. Obviously when we got into WinXP, the desktop resolution was still at 1280x960 and needed changing back to 1440x900 to get the nice crisp image.
Has anyone heard of a driver changing a monitor's "native" resolution?
Thanks
Mad Max

HURRAH!
I have an 8800gts with two samsung SyncMaster 940bw lcds.
Their native resolution is 1440x900. my graphics card kept displaying them at 1280x1024. I send nvidia's tech support and email they (quickly) responded and told me to do a custom timing. It DID NOT WORK. I would create the custom timing and then test it. the test would fail. bummer. so i was waiting for them to answer me back and i decided to do some more research.
It now works.
Here is what i did to get it to work...
1. NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Manage custom timings.
2. Click both "Treat as HDTV" and "Allow modes not exposed by the display"
3. Click [Create...]
4. Under Custom display mode values:
Horizontal desktop pixels: 1440
Vertical desktop lines: 900
GDI Refresh rate: 60
Bits per pixel: 32
(don't have "Interlaced" checked)
5. Click [Advanced >>] (by the way this is where I didn't go when NVIDIA emailed me)
6. Under "Back-end parameters":
Timing standard: DMT
Desired refresh rate: 60
(the rest of the fields are grayed out)
7. Under "Front-end paramers"
Scaling type: Display (none)
8. Click [Test]
9. Click [OK]

I have now spent about 3 nights in a row trying to get my new 8800 GTX to work properly with my HDTV, I have a Toshiba 42HL67 42" LCD HDTV, and am trying to get my card to display in its native res: 1366x768. I tried the above method and while it has gotten me the closest to success when compared to others, it still does not work. The test at least does not fail like every other setting I've tried, but when I go to test, the screen just flickers then goes black, and I have to wait for it to default back to the previous res. I've tried 1360x768 and 1368x768 as well, same result. My friend has a samsung tv and he was getting the same result.
I KNOW that this tv will take a 1366x768 res from a computer because my old ATI X1900XT worked just fine, didn't even have to create any custom crap, it was one of the default resolutions I could pick from within the windows display settings themselves.
If anyone is having this same problem or has any idea what might fix it, please help!! I am desparate at this point!! What's weird is it works with 1280x720, and 1920x1080...but not this one which is in between.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!!

I pretty much have the same problem as the reply above me. 32" Westinghouse LCD TV, native resolution is 1367x768. I currently am stuck using a quite old version of the drivers (93.71) because the newer drivers' control panel won't let me add 1368x768 (what It's currently set at). I find it irritating that they would change the drivers this much and have it not provide the same functionality as previous driver versions. Plus the new control panel is completely and unnecessarily bloated..,NVIDIA's drivers were one of the main reasons I went back to NVIDIA cards from ATI's bloated driver software in the first place. Anyways enough complaining...if anyone has a link to somewhere that has a fix for my current situation it would be very much appreciated.

So you have no problem with the 93.71 drivers, but the latest ones make the screen go black like in my situation above? Maybe I need to check those out for myself...
I'm afraid there may never be a solution however, check this link:
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia....&p_sp=undefinedSo just what I was afraid of, sounds like NVIDIAs philosophy is to conform strictly to the contraints of the EDID firmware on the HDTVs themselves, which most likely only inlcudes the "HD formats": 720p (1280x720), 1080p (1920x1080), etc... because that's the primary function they were designed for. This explains why my tv has no problem with 1280x720 and 1920x1080 resolutions but craps out when I actually try its native res, which is not an official HD resolution. They just need to have an option to disable the "conform to EDID" function!!! Please NVIDIA, fix this...

OK so I'm also trying to get this machine to run at 1440 x 900 without changing video card. I've got a GeForce 3 and the latest 93.71 drivers.
If I play too much with the custom timings things go out of whack, and I don't want to make it worse. My control panel and settings and such look like the attachment, there are lots of fields there not already mentioned in this thread.
[attachmentid=9736]
A little help to get my generic flat panel 20" to run at 1440 x 900?
Cheers,
Tony
