Hopefully this can continue the discussion about our "nvlddmkm stopped responding" error in a constructive fashion.
quote=rikkuotaku1,Aug 15 2007, 02:44 PM] QUOTE .....these observations lead me to believe that the Vista requires an unnecessary level of stability to satisfy DRM (AACS) requirements and that Nvidia is either (or both) unable to manufacture sufficiently stable hardware or drivers that meet those stringent requirements. Heat, Overclocking, etc. would introduce an extra amount of 'error' (as your microwave would cause your 802.11b/g signal to deteriorate) that Vista will not tolarate. If you've read the Vista DRM specs, you'll notice that an extra amount of errors is to be treated as a hardware 'attack' and the video/audio subsystem is to be reset - perhaps a 'TDR error' results. I think this is a good speculation and might be fundamental to the issues with the latest hardware and software. Singling out Nvidia though is not accurate because ATI has the errors too. QUOTE This is all theory on my part, I confess, but after reading Peter Gutmann's article (PLEASE read it, some of it is nonsense, but the tilt bit/driver part is genius) everything literally falls into place - especially when you consider how complex the problem is likely to be, how long it has gone unfixed, and how difficult it must be to write drivers that can account for every odd microwave/gamma-ray that 'tilts' a certain bit out of whack. Although the Gutmnann article is interesting it is still biased and up on it's high horse, minimizing IP rights without addressing the real issue that effects everyone at an even more fundamental level then copying big Hollywood properties. Theft effects even the poor starving artists as well. Now if Gutmann wasn't just pontificating he'd be clearly spelling out a solution to IP rights issues. The only possible one he mentions is the honor system---which I think no one is going to still believe that is possible--considering the amount of entitlement attitude floating about. QUOTE My frustration is that after MONTHS of having hardware that is LABELED Vista compatible, I am unable to get it working with Vista. This is compounded by the fact that Nvidia is unwilling to own up to the problem Remember it's not just Vista or Nvidia, but Xp and ATI as well, having these issues now. QUOTE I hate being lied to by companies, as does Otto and others on this forum. Our only recourse is to voice our frustration to anyone who will listen. I apologize that you've bore the brunt of this, but Nvidia has so far treated its customers like crap with regards to this problem and have cheated us out of our money by selling products that are falsely advertised and labled. After the problem has gone on for so long, it is safe to say that they know of the widespread issue and with heads in the sand, continue to sell Vista compatible products knowing full well that there is an appreciable failure rate. This is unacceptable. Otto should have stayed civil. I don't recall reading anyone being uncivil like he was. Eveyone here is biting their tongue to try to keep it conversational. He should have too. QUOTE To have others on this forums jump on the bandwagon that the majority of these problems are 'bad hardware', 'heat', 'overclocking' issues is as insulting as being called a stupid jerk. It is a lie and while perhaps lying is not against the forum rules, purposefully misleading users with misinformation about their problems, should be. Let's all work together to bring Nvidia to task about this critical problem and not follow wild-goose chases that skirt the real issue. How is that an "insult" to suggest tweaking hardware can help with the problem? Even by your own analysis is it hardware and software. People have a right to try things and communciate what they tried and what the results were. Certainly DRM is a reality of the world and certainly this has added more complexity and problems for hardware and software as welll as bring up many issues pro and con about media protection, but until critics can offer a solution better, then at least stop it with the attacks on Microsoft, Hollywood, or the other companies, who are trying to sort this out. How to please everyone is their goal--now that is easy isn't it? The demand for bigger, better, more intensive games and faster and more powerful computers, and better resolutions and "GIMME" -----is also bringing on the issues. The "GIMME for free" group tends to complain first. Computing is a work in progress. We all know that. If we want stabilty we can go back to the command line and forget about computers being mutimedia extravaganzas. Nowadays we all know that buying the latest and greatest carries with it a risk of problems and frustrations, till they are sorted out. No point to being indignant as long as they honor their warranties and keep working on fixing the problem. Complaining can be useful, when it comes to things like forced gimping of HD or disabling routes that can allow full HD copying. So rational complaining can help keep companies finding new solutions to avoid upsetting any of the users or content owners. I'm sure that is the goal. If the "tilt-bit" is to blame then bring it up first with the international bootleggers or even the entitlement-driven extremists in the Open Source community who love to steal content and philosophically believe, that no one has the right to claim ownership of some digital bits, but until the critics have a solution and will offer it, then they should not be up on such a high horse. At any rate if this is true then all the companies will keep putting their heads together and find ways to solve it and in the meantime honor their warranties and extend warranties if necessary.
