I have a GForce FX 5500 in my pc that is shorting and want to replace & upgrade the card. Nothing real fancy, mainly I surf the net. Not a big gamer....

Here's some PC info....

Pentium[R] 4 CPU 3.20GHz
3.21 GHz 3.0 GB of ram DDR
ACPI multi processor PC
I do see PCI BUS listed?
17 inch monitor (big white old school)

I noticed a lot of these cards use DDR2 & DDR3? Do I need a card that has DDR like my memory?

Any help would be appreciated....

Thanks,
Mark

Erm, im guessing you don't have a pcie. Id suggest figuring out if you have a agp or pcie, and getting a 7 series like a 7800 gtx or something. You're computer won't handle anything newer. And no memory does not need to coincide, but DDR1 man? Someone needs an overhaul. lol.

Heck with that rig I am betting if you upgrade the GPU then probably you will have to upgrade your PSU as well. I am willing to bet you are going to be short on 12v amps. But first things first. And as stated alread we need to know what kind of slot you have availaible for your GPU.

Both. If you pull the cover off, a short brown slot is AGP. A long slanted-edged slot is PCI express. A sharp white slot is PCI.

Here it's green and short with a pull pin that holds the card in (lol) I have no clue what it is, but here's a couple pics....

"Top View"

"Bottom View"

Can you tell from these? I do see "AGP 8X" right by it?

Thx,
Mark

Its AGP. technically i would usually not recommend wasting money on agp graphics cards and instead save to revamp your whole machine, but if you are just a consumer user and just surf net, and IM , then get a 7800 GTX AGP.

Looks like the 7800 is no longer offered at Nvidia................the lowest model is the 8400 or 8500

http://www.nvidia.com/content/HelpMeChoose....asp?lang=en-us <----scroll down to the bottom ones.....which would you recommend? and are the 8400 & 8500 AGP compatible?

Thanks....

These are PCIE cards. Nvidia will not advertise AGP cards. AGP died a long time ago. You need to go to the store and see if they carry anything. Or, most likely, you'll have to special order it.
