QUOTE Q: Why am I not able to resize the HDTV Desktop (adjust overscan compensation setting) with GeForce 8800 based graphics cards on Windows XP? A.Overscan compensation is not supported on GeForce 8800 based graphics cards when connecting to many HDTVs over a digital interface (i.e. DVI) with the default driver settings. However, with ForceWare Windows XP drivers v158.22 or higher, overscan compensation over DVI outputs can be enabled via a Registry Key workaround. To enable this workaround, perform the following steps: Download the following file onto your PC: (hyperlink to EnableOverscanCompensation.exe) Double-click the "EnableOverscanCompensation.exe" executable. This will run a macro to create the "EnOverscanComp" Registry Key in the Windows Registry. 3) Re-boot your PC. (Note: we have seen one PC configuration which requires two re-boots). 4) Open the NVIDIA Control Panel by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "NVIDIA Control Panel". From the "Resize HDTV Desktop" option in the navigation pane of the NVIDIA Control Panel you can resize your Windows Desktop to fit the viewable area of your HDTV. The above workaround can also be used to enable fixed aspect ratio scaling on similar display configurations. Note: this workaround will disable HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection) support, which is required for playback of protected HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD content over digital interfaces. To disable this workaround and re-enable HDCP support, remove the EnOverscanComp Registry Key by running the DisableOverscanCompensation.exe executable (hyperlink to DisableOverscanCompensation.exe) and then rebooting your PC. ChrisRay - I have two EVGA 8800GT 512 cards in SLI on a MSI K9N SLI 2F with XP, and the 178.13 driver, because its the newest on EVGAs site, in spite of Nvidia have the 180.48, and I STILL can't get rid of the overscan, in spite of the overscan feature is there. When i get the picture to fit my TV (SONY KDS-55A2000 FULL HD), in the 1920x1080, and accept, the screen goes black, and come up with the same picture again, which is overscanned.
Hope you have a clue on that. I will try the newest driver (180.48), and hope it works, but i doubt :( - EDIT : The 180.48 driver works better. After some xtra try in the overscan box, its suddently worked. Weird why the 178.13 couldn't. Buts. Im happy. Now the DVI-HDMI works completely, in 1920x1080 :D This post has been edited by Minii: Dec 15 2008, 04:09 PM |

This was working for me at first, I ran the macro and I could then play Counter-Strike 1.6 with black bars while using 640 * 480, then I deleted the EnableOverscanCompensation file cause I didnt know I still needed it. Then it stopped working, so I downloaded it again but can't get it working again :s, my options in nvidia control panel, display > flat panel scaling is all greyed out again. Any ideas?
GeForce 8800 GTS Samsung 2232BW Worked in Vista but hey, who wants to use Vista. I need to use XP for several games |

Tip for all of you overscan compensation users
This is a little more rushed since I typed it all up then backspaces and deleted it... -_- anyway.. You may find this helpful if you HATE launching the EnableOverscanUtilis every time you want to play counter-strike or another game. After a while of having to restart my pc often when I have 4 other people waiting on me to scrim against another team, it began to get a little taxing. Unless you're running on a single core processor with 256mb of ram, you shouldn't have any trouble launching a CMD prompt based regedit once per firefox session, or each time you load steam or msn. So here's what you can do: Make a .bat file that launches the overscan application each time you load a program which you use at least once per startup. The process I used is simple, and here's how I did it: 1.) Go to start>all programs>accesories>notepad. What you need to do is make a new line for each program you want to launch using this formula: start "" "program-destination.exe" essentially its just the word start, one space, opening and closing quotations and then the destination of the program in quotes. Here's what mine looks like for firefox: start "" "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" start "" "C:\Documents and Settings\Skwissgarr\Desktop\OverscanUtils\EnableOverscanCompensation.exe" save the file with whatever name and destination you want, and end the save name with .bat. ie: firefox.bat Now launch the file you just saved like an exe, it should open the program you commanded along with the overscan compensation application. final note: You may wish to save the program with the same icon as, say... firefox or steam. To do this, go to the firefox desktop or quicklaunch shortcut, then right click>properties>shortcut tab and click the 'change icon' button. This will open a small menu which should have a destination written in the box. copy this and then open the same menu of your .bat file, in the destination box type what you just copied. It should change within a second or so to the icon you directed. That should cover mostly everything. |

Is there ANY way to make it work under Windows 7?
I have a 8800 GTS card and Win7 (64 Bit) running. Driver version is 191.07 It simply does not work to set sclaing options to "Do not Scale". After I've chosen it, it's immediately set back to "Use my Display's Built-In Scaling". I just want to play games and like black bars at the side of the picture more than strange scalings. I've also tried the tool above but it does not fix the bug. I've spent 10 minutes on rebooting and trying if it works but nothing happens. Could anyone please help me, because upscaling really makes the picture blurred. |
